Renegade Liberal senator puts case for new carbon price

Australia's electricity sector produces more than a third of the nation's carbon emissions, but it has been exempted from the Safeguard Mechanism, which is the federal government's main climate policy. This is seemingly due to the potential political risk that including the sector in the mechanism would lead to higher power prices, while the sector has claimed it would not be practical for it to come under the mechanism. However, Liberal senator Andrew McLachlan has backed calls by economists for the sector to come under the mechanism, with economists arguing that doing so would help stimulate the rollout of new clean energy and more cheaply lower emissions from coal and gas..
